Description
This Early Numeracy Action Research project will focus on weaving aspects of mathematical concepts derived from the Early Years Learning Framework V.2 and the Kindergarten Curriculum Guidelines into the spaces and places within Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten environments.
The Early Numeracy Action Research Project will guide educators in mathematicising their environments, ensuring that maths is meaningful and relevant to children's lives. The project will involve active participation in 2 full days of PL at AISWA where we examine the ways to include mathematical opportunities in our places, spaces and everyday experiences for young children.
This PL will include a strong focus on creating opportunities for maths in both the indoor and outdoor learning environments. Through reflection of learning centres and resources, this project will focus on reshaping the spaces available to enhance children’s active participation in mathematical experiences.

Outcomes
- Enhanced Understanding of Early Numeracy Development. Educators will gain a comprehensive understanding of how young children develop early numeracy skills and the importance of making mathematics meaningful and relevant to their everyday lives. Day 1 will focus on planning and implementing numeracy-rich environments and experiences based on children’s interests and developmental stages.
- Integration of Mathematical Opportunities. Educators will learn and practice strategies to integrate mathematical opportunities into both indoor and outdoor learning environments, ensuring that maths is a natural and engaging part of children’s daily experiences. In the first Day 1 PL session, each school participating in this project will receive a FREE Maths In-Action Kit for use in their own setting and then this is discussed in the second day of PL as a group.
- Creation of Mathematically Rich Environments. Action Research and Reflective Practice:
- Educators will engage in action research, reflecting on their practices and the impact of changes made to their environments, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and professional growth in early numeracy education.
- Educators will develop skills to critically reflect on and reshape their learning centres and resources, creating exciting environments that actively promote and support children’s active participation in mathematical experiences.
- These outcomes aim to empower educators with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to create rich, engaging, and meaningful mathematical experiences for young children, both indoors and outdoors.
