Happy Holidays – AISWA Office is closing on 18 December and reopening on 7 January 2025

Gooniyandi Power

Near Hall's Creek in Western Australia's Kimberley region, the Yiyili Community, and its Community School are working collaboratively to secure positive language and literacy outcomes in Kriol, in Gooniyandi and in Standard Australian English.

AISWA has been working closely with this school and community to support them with their goal. This week, Dr. Lindy Norris from Murdoch University and the AISWA Languages Consultant , Claire Leong had a skype conversation with a classroom teacher, three Aboriginal Education Workers (AEWs) (and a baby!) at Yiyili Community School who are delivering the Gooniyandi lessons. The AEWs are compiling a poster of suggested tasks from which they can draw inspiration to create dynamic lessons.

They specifically wanted ideas that didn’t require resources. Lindy and Claire helped them with for some suggestions to add to their list .(See Simple Games for Reinforcing Vocabulary and MCTs below.)   Please share your ideas for quick games and tasks with our colleagues in Yiyili.
