About the Role

An exciting opportunity exists for a suitability qualified Laboratory Technician to support our dynamic Science Department.  This is a full-time, ongoing, term-time only position starting in January 2025.

 

In this role the Laboratory Technician will organise preparation areas and classroom laboratories to ensure a safe learning environment for students and staff and undertake general housekeeping of chemicals, equipment (including repairs and maintenance), ordering supplies/equipment and assisting with stock management tasks. This role will require you to liaise with science teachers to determine scientific product needs in relation to experiments and identifying future purchase requirements of science equipment.

 

The successful applicant will be highly motivated and possess the ability to work collaboratively as part of a team, as well as independently, to assist with the efficient operation of the Science Learning Area. They will prepare chemicals, equipment and materials, design and construct teaching aids and collect and care for living organisms for study purposes in compliance with chemical, physical, and biological laboratory practices and legislative requirements.

 

Laboratory Technician

  • Safely maintain school laboratories and co-ordinate the use and storage of resources and consumables

  • To prepare, construct, operate and maintain laboratory apparatus and equipment

  • To demonstrate the safe correct use of equipment and materials and assist in classroom demonstrations in a laboratory or where required

  • To assist teachers in planning, testing and development of new experiments

  • Handle dangerous substances

  • To weigh, measure and mix chemical compounds preparing appropriate stock solutions

  • Dispose of contaminated and used materials according to relevant policy and legislation and be responsible for all normal safeguards in the laboratories

  • Organise and collect fresh specimens

  • Pick up orders placed with local suppliers

  • Provide care for living organisms established for study purposes

  • Maintain stock management system and conduct annual stocktake on all stores and equipment to ensure adequate stock levels

  • Complete administrative paperwork

  • Maintain aquariums, aquaculture systems 

  • Wash, clean, dry and where necessary sterilise glassware and equipment

  • Clean dishwasher on a weekly basis

  • Check and clean aquaculture ponds filters on a weekly basis

  • At the end of each day remove any glass, chemicals or any other residue from the sinks in the Science classrooms

  • At the end of each day lock all laboratory and Science office windows

  • At the end of each day ensure all Science computers, air conditioners or heaters are turned off

  • Report maintenance issues via the Maintenance email
