About the Role
Frederick Irwin Anglican School has an opportunity for a passionate and dedicated leader to join our team as the Head of English. This full-time (1.0FTE) ongoing position will commence in Term 1, 2025.  

The Head of English has responsibility for providing creative and effective leadership to the members of the Department and for the ongoing development and supervision of the curriculum and the quality of teaching and learning that is provided to each student. 

Frederick Irwin Anglican School teacher salaries are 2.5% above the comparable Department of Education of Western Australia rates.

Head of English
A Head of Department should be an exemplary teacher within their own subject area, and a leader of teachers in subjects under their jurisdiction. 

Head of English must meet the following:

  • Understand and support the Mission, Vision and Ethos and Core Values of The Anglican Schools Commission (ASC) and Frederick Irwin Anglican School (the School).  
  • Actively support a child safe culture. 
  • Provide vision and leadership for the English department to implement the School’s vision and strategy as a driver of 21st Century learning. 
  • Enable and support teaching, learning, research and administration by managing and integrating services in information management and technology. 
  • Be an exemplary teacher within their own subject. 
  • Lead educators and support staff.  
  • Demonstrate excellent knowledge and understanding of contemporary pastoral issues in the School, local community and wider society. 
  • Demonstrate excellent administrative and organisational skills including strong written and verbal communication skills and effective time management. 
  • Demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills being inclusive, approachable, a good listener and having the capacity to establish and maintain positive relationships with staff, students, parents and carers.  
  • The effective teaching/learning programme for all subjects taught in English in the Secondary section of the School.
  • Determine and maintain resources required for the effective teaching of subjects under their jurisdiction.
  • In close collaboration with the Business Manager, prepare the annual budget for the Department and work with the Business Manager to manage that budget.
  • Develop and manage an effective assessment programme including the preparation and marking of examination papers, the checking, and authorisation of student results and grades prior to reporting for subjects under their jurisdiction.
  • Monitor student performance in subjects under their jurisdiction to ensure as far as possible that all students are achieving their potential.
  • The effective management of the School Curriculum and Standards Authority approved courses including effective teaching of correct course content, assessment, moderation and attendance at meetings as required.
  • The effective management and integration of the Australian Curriculum including effective teaching of this content, assessment, moderation and attendance at meetings as required.
  • The effective management of relevant data which is used to inform teaching and to improve learning outcomes.

Pastoral Care
As an Anglican School, pastoral care is extremely important at Frederick Irwin Anglican School.  This is a role of the teachers who manage the supervision and welfare of the students while at school.
