Description
This 14 hour course teaches adults how to assist adolescents who are experiencing a mental health crisis or developing a mental health problem.
The course is suitable for adults working with adolescents (those aged between 12 and 18 years), however, it can also be relevant for those helping people who are a little younger or older.
Course Content
Participants will learn about adolescent development and the signs and symptoms of these mental health problems, where and how to get help and what sort of help has been shown by research to be effective.
Who should attend MHFA training?
Ideally, school staff who
- Regularly work with young people of this age group (ages 12-18)
- Provide elements of pastoral care and support
- Have expressed interest in attending this training
Health and safety precautions are important considerations for the AISWA MHFA trainers and for those who attend the training. However, these workshops are not designed as a therapy or support group. There is a risk that the information or discussions from these workshops can trigger a strong emotional reaction. Please consider this before choosing to attend the training.
Outcomes
- Recognise the signs and symptoms of common mental health problems in adolescents.
- Recognise and respond to an emerging or worsening mental health problem and the treatments and supports available.
- Know how to approach a young person they are concerned about and initiate a conversation about those concerns.
- Know how to offer initial support and information and how to help a young person seek professional help or other supports.
- Know how to use a practical, evidence-based action plan.
Presenters
Dana De Bunnetat (AISWA Staff)
Psychologist
Dana is a registered psychologist who has worked within a diverse range of schools for over a decade. Starting with AISWA in 2015, Dana is passionate about working with schools in metro, rural and remote settings. Over her experience working within the education context, she enjoys addressing social, emotional, behavioural and learning needs in a collaborative way with students, families and school staff. Her professional interests include neurodiversity (ADHD, Autism, SLD), trauma, parenting, and mental health and wellbeing within education. Dana is an accredited facilitator in Gatekeeper Suicide Prevention, Youth Mental Health First Aid and Triple P parenting programs.
Tammy Barnes (AISWA Staff)
Senior Psychologist
Tammy is a Senior Psychologist at AISWA. Tammy has been working as a psychologist with schools at AISWA for over 11 years. Prior to working for AISWA, she worked with schools in the public sector. Tammy has worked in diverse settings in WA which has included working with schools in remote, rural, and metropolitan locations. Part of her work has included delivering training in Youth Mental Health First Aid, Gatekeeper Suicide Prevention Training and Aussie Optimism Program. Tammy is passionate about mental health prevention and intervention in schools, including the implementation of social and emotional learning programs.
