Description

We welcome Nicky Sloss, Manager of the Education Sectors—Education, Prevention and Inclusion Branch at the eSafety Commission, who will be joined by AISWA staff to present this face-to-face session designed for school leaders and staff who work in wellbeing and child safety and want to learn more about the eSafety Commission, its resources, and its support from both a proactive and reactive perspective.

The session will cover:

  • Ways schools can promote and participate in eSafety 
  • Education resources, best practice framework and information for schools
  • eSafety’s role and reporting schemes 
  • Information in eSafety space regarding AI (artificial intelligence), sextortion, cyberbullying,  inappropriate images and how that is affecting our students 
  • Support and application from an AISWA perspective 

Outcomes

  • Understand the Role of eSafety in Schools:  Gain insights into the eSafety Commission's role and reporting schemes to support proactive and reactive child safety measures.
  • Explore Best Practices and Resources: Learn about education resources and best practice frameworks provided by the eSafety Commission to enhance well-being and child safety in schools.
  • Address Emerging eSafety Challenges: Develop awareness of issues related to AI, sextortion, cyberbullying, inappropriate images, and their impact on students. 
  • Promote School Participation in eSafety Initiatives: Identify strategies for schools to actively promote and participate in eSafety programs and initiatives.
  • Apply AISWA-Specific Support: Understand how AISWA can assist in the practical application of eSafety resources and address wellbeing and child safety challenges.

Lynne Nixon <span>(AISWA Staff)</span>

Over the past 40 years, Lynne has gained extensive experience in both education and small business ownership. Her teaching career in NSW and WA spans early childhood, primary, and lower secondary classrooms, as well as special needs education and music. She has also held school leadership roles, including Principal of an independent school in WA. In addition, Lynne has supported and mentored school leaders and assisted schools through the school registration process.

Since joining AISWA in 2017, Lynne has demonstrated her passion for supporting schools in the areas of special needs education and child protection. Her roles have included Inclusive Education Consultant and Coordinator, and she currently serves as a Child Protection Consultant.

In her current role, Lynne provides guidance and support to all AISWA schools in the areas of child safety and protection. She is the key contact for inquiries related to child abuse, including mandatory reporting, and delivers a variety of training programs focused on preventing and responding to child abuse, ensuring schools meet registration requirements.

Lucy Sabatini (AISWA Staff)

As the newly appointed Wellbeing Manager at AISWA, Lucy brings over 30 years of experience in education and leadership across the Independent and Catholic sectors. A dedicated advocate for wellbeing, Lucy is passionate about creating supportive environments and opportunities that allow both staff and students to drive positive outcomes and flourish. Her role involves fostering meaningful partnerships, delivering leadership consultancy, and providing professional learning for member schools. With a strong focus on whole-school wellbeing initiatives, particularly in Consent and Respectful Relationships Education (CRRE), Lucy is committed to ensuring that member schools feel supported in cultivating inclusive and thriving communities.

Nicky Sloss

Originally a (PD) HPE teacher and Head of Sport, Nicky became a Head of Wellbeing before working at AISNSW as the Senior Wellbeing Consultant for close to 10 years. She has more than 20 years of experience working as an education specialist, supporting schools both in Australia and overseas. Nicky is experienced in project management, having worked on statewide initiatives and government-funded projects with links to student safety, mental health, and wellbeing before moving to eSafety.

Nicky is currently the Manager of eSafety’s Education team. This team oversees eSafety’s National Online Safety Education Council representing all three education sectors in each State and Territory, the eSafety Youth Council and eSafety’s work supporting the tertiary sector.

The Education Sectors team ensures that young people’s voice is front and centre in program and policy development and supports targeted and contemporary online safety resources and professional learning for educators.

In her role, Nicky and eSafety colleagues work with ACARA, and other state-based curriculum authorities and professional bodies, to provide support and advice to ensure that online safety education curriculum and curriculum connections reflect best practice and incorporates the latest themes and evidence.
