Description
School-based psychologist network meetings are held biannually at AISWA, one in Term 2 and one in Term 4. The meetings allow psychologists in Independent schools to meet with their peers.
Each meeting focuses on a topical psychology issue.
The focus of this meeting is “Threat assessment approach: Supporting young people at risk of mass casualty and violent extremism”.
A Safer Australia: Australia’s Counter-Terrorism and Violent Extremism Strategy 2025 states that “The growth in the number of young people engaging in violent extremist ideologies continues to be a concerning feature of Australia’s security environment. The prevalence of violent extremist content online means this material has a wider reach and is more difficult to identify, contain and manage. The many emotional, physical and social changes that young people experience, combined with limited agency and power, can make this a challenging time for them to explore their values and develop suitable strategies to shape their world. Supporting young people to be safe both online and in the physical environment and to respect the rights of others is critical for their wellbeing and to prevent them from being harmed, or from harming others. Early intervention can help prevent a young person from engaging in violent extremism, support them to build a more positive future, and divert them from involvement in the criminal justice system.”
To support Independent schools and students in the Independent sector, we have organised the following speakers for the event.
- Anh Rivera, School Psychologist Consultant, Service Response, Statewide Services, Department of Education
- A representative from the WA Fixated Threat Assessment Centre (FTAC). FTAC is a joint Department of Health - Western Australia Police agency that provides specialist mental health assessment and consultation for referred individuals who may be at risk of carrying out grievance-fuelled violence or are identified as being at risk of radicalisation or engaging in violent extremism.
PLEASE NOTE: This event is open to School-Based Psychologists ONLY.
Light refreshments will be served from 1.00pm.
