Description

HIGH IMPACT TEACHING STRATEGIES (HITS) for teaching primary mathematics.

Mathematics can be complicated to teach; therefore, we want to maximise effective student learning time using quality tasks.
In this two-day course, tasks will be shared that illustrate how HITS may be incorporated into the teaching of mathematics. Guidance for ways to DIFFERENTIATE and assess tasks will be given.

Leaders and participants will be introduced to Whole School Approaches (WSA) for teaching mathematics, in the areas of:
• Fluency - Basic Number Facts, and
• Problem Solving, including word problems and mathematical modelling.

Opportunities will be provided to discuss various school contexts and to focus on certain HITS most applicable to individual school contexts. To this end, it would be ideal if two participants could attend, one with a leadership role such as a deputy or numeracy leader.
Links to the proposed WA and Australian V9 mathematics curriculum will be referenced.

Participants will be given a brief background reading to illustrate key HITS that can be shared with colleagues at school.

Outcomes

  • Participants will read and engage in discussions about the latest research on teaching as applied to primary mathematics.
  • Participants will review the balance of explicit and enquiry teaching approaches used in their schools as applied to primary mathematics.
  • Participants will formulate plans for improving the teaching and learning of primary mathematics.
