The journeys of EAL/D students can be as diverse and complex as the linguistic and cultural experiences that students bring with them to the classroom. In this workshop, we will explore various EAL/D student journeys and discuss how we, as teachers and education support staff, can best cater to the needs of students across a range of secondary school settings.

Presenters:
Louise Dodman has been the Principal Consultant for EAL/D at the School Curriculum and Standards division of the Education Department for the past nine years. Prior to this role, Louise was a classroom teacher of EAL/D in an Intensive English Centre (IEC) and of Year 11 and 12 students from a range of linguistic, cultural and educational contexts.
Patricia Konigsberg is Principal Consultant EAL/D, at the Western Australian Department of Education. A linguist and a qualified teacher with extensive experience teaching students of all ages across metropolitan, regional and remote areas of WA, Patricia has co-designed and co-delivered multiple research projects on Aboriginal English. Patricia is passionate about supporting all EALD learners and in particular interested in empowering Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal students and teachers to engage in two-way learning.
Rubi Mabrouk is the Principal Consultant for EALD at the Department of Education, Secondary, DHS and Post School Pathways Branch. Prior to joining the Department of Education in 2008, Rubi excelled in a number of leading roles in the TESOL and ELICOS private sector in Western Australia, including Program Leader and Director of Studies at Embassy College, *ELICOS lecturer at Central TAFE and *IELTS trainer at Murdoch University, MLI. Rubi is currently leading a Project, in collaboration with the Office of Multicultural Interest, to review and update Multicultural Education Resources for secondary students and countering-racism evaluation tool for western Australian Schools. Rubi has an extensive experience as a classroom teacher of EALD in mainstream secondary schools and Intensive English Centres.

Kate Reitzenstein is Consultant for Multilingual Literacy at AISWA. She works in the area of Aboriginal languages, second language acquisition and bilingualism. Kate runs professional learning courses and advises Independent schools on curriculum, pedagogy, and policy.
Marisa Schiavi currently holds the role of EAL/D & Languages Team Coordinator at CEWA and has significant experience working with migrant and refugee students, as well as international students in both national and international contexts. Her background includes key roles in Intensive English Units, bilingual schools, adult migrant programs and supporting staff working with Aboriginal EAL/D students in Kimberley schools. In her current role, Marisa provides guidance on multicultural and multilingual education across all CEWA schools
Guest Speakers:
Jaime Garrett is a Level 3 classroom teacher of Secondary English and Science at Quairading District High School who works with Aboriginal EAL/D Learners whilst supporting staff in EAL/D pedagogies. Jaime grew up in the Quairading community and works alongside Aboriginal staff and the local Aboriginal Elders to plan and deliver culturally and linguistically responsive curriculum across the Primary and Secondary school.
Donella Grieco is an EALD teacher at the School of Isolated and Distance Education. She has developed online courses for Year 11 and 12 migrant and Aboriginal EALD students, and currently teaches secondary EALD students based in regional and geographically remote locations across WA. Donella is a part of the EALD Hub Group, and she is an EALD representative for the Differentiation Working Party with the Australasian Association of Distance Education Schools (AADES).
Ellen Jenkyn is the Virtual EaL/D teacher at CEWA, and has over 10 years' experience working with EaL/D individuals. During this time, she has worked in the community sector with adult learners, as well as in primary and secondary education with a range of humanitarian entrant, migrant and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.
Melanie Postmus worked for the Education Department for more than 15 years (between children and travels) in both secondary and primary Intensive English Centres and in EaLD roles before moving to Aranmore Catholic College in 2020 to head both the IEC and EaLD programs there. She is an active member of WATESOL and the Curriculum Advisory Council for EaLD in secondary schools for SCSA.
Kate Simeon is the Deputy Director of ASC International, and has over 15 years' experience working with EaL/D students. During this time she has worked extensively with humanitarian entrant students, migrants and international students, as well as with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. She has also undertaken a range of roles for SCSA and ACARA working on EaL/D resources and is currently the chair of the Course Advisory Committee for EaL/D.
Belinda Stewart is Deputy Principal of Cyril Jackson (IEC) and President of WATESOL.
