Description
The psychology of learning focuses on a range of topics related to how people learn and interact with their environments. In the psychological sense, learning is about changing behaviours, acquiring new skills, and adapting to new information.
Modern views on learning acknowledge that learning is a complex process influenced by countless factors, from genetics to environment. Advances in brain imaging and cognitive science have given us deeper insights into how learning happens at a neurological level.
Educational psychologists apply theories of human development (including social, emotional, and cognitive processes) to understand individual learning and inform the instructional process.
This session will provide an overview of these key processes involved in learning and connect this research to its practical implications for teaching and learning.
Outcomes
Participants will be able to:
- Identify key areas of basic cognitive principles that impact learning.
- Connect these concepts to practical implications for teaching in the classroom.
- Identify common misconceptions or “neuromyths” about how students think and learn.
