Sharp Reading: Decoding Strategy Instruction Stages 1&2

Learning Area

Sharp Reading has been developed by Hilton Ayery and Brian Parker who are teachers and teacher trainers from Christchurch, New Zealand. Sharp Reading is based on the most up to date research in literacy and is the culmination of 10 years of action research at the New Zealand Graduate School of Education, including ongoing engagement with schools.

Set students up for success through simple routines that embed mental strategies for decoding text. Through supporting meaning and scaffolding the skills for word attack, students internalise strong, transferrable strategies to decode text accross contexts.

This workshop focuses on the GUIDED READING component of your reading program. Participants engage in practical strategies through the '5 Bits' routine. The routine provides a simple instructional guide to teach decoding, and prepares students to transfer to more complex comprehension skills.

Part 1: Getting the routine right (DSI)

Part 2: Data collection and explicit teaching (DSI)

 This workshop provides participants with:

  • an understanding of how learners begin to read and progress towards competent decoding
  • an explicit, transferrable routine for instruction, that empowers students and simplifies the work of teachers
  • skills for keen observation and data collection to determine explicit teaching targeted at student needs.
  • a clear learning pathway for the teaching of reading and a transition from decoding to Comprehension Strategy Instruction.
