The members of the Association are the employers of Labour at Independent Schools in Western Australia.
Independent Schools are defined as schools that are registered under Section 160 of the School Education Act 1999, which provide full-time tuition with adequate staff, which are not run for profit and are not administered by or on behalf of the Government of Western Australia.
The governing body of a school can apply for membership and continue in membership if the school has ongoing registration through the Department of Education Services.
Such registration requires that the school:
-
Is incorporated under the Associations Incorporations Act or provides evidence of the school's not-for-profit status.
-
Has an appropriate governance structure defined by a Constitution, and
-
Is responsible and ethical in the use of public monies provided for the education of students.
In serving their communities, member schools should aspire to high standards of school governance by basing their policies and procedures on the following principles of good practice and demonstrate:
-
Responsible stewardship for the school.
-
Accountability for the governance standards of the school.
-
Leadership through the setting of strategic direction for the school.
-
Quality assurance through ensuring that members are aware of their roles and responsibilities and those of management.
-
Accountability for the financial viability of the school in order to ensure that the school can deliver the education offered to students to support the school's mission.
-
Responsible employment practices reflected in the payment of teaching salaries broadly in line with the State's major systems
-
Ethical decision-making in order that decisions are well informed and transparent.
Inherent in accepting membership of the Association is an acceptance that each member has a responsibility to ensure that no action by the school should bring the Association and its members into disrepute.
